What Happens If Your Backflow Device Fails Its Annual Test?

A failed test isn't a disaster — but ignoring it is. Here's exactly what happens next, and how fast it can be fixed.

Backflow assembly during annual testing

Every year, thousands of backflow prevention assemblies across Southern California fail their annual certification test. If yours is one of them, the notice can feel alarming — especially when your water district sets a compliance deadline. The good news: a failed test is routine, fixable, and usually resolved in a single visit.

Why Devices Fail

Backflow preventers are mechanical devices that live outdoors, under pressure, year-round. The most common causes of a failed test are worn internal components — not catastrophic damage:

  • Worn check discs and seals — rubber parts degrade with age and water chemistry.
  • Fouled check valves — debris or mineral buildup keeps a check from seating fully.
  • Weak relief valve springs — the relief valve opens too late, or not at all.
  • Freeze or heat damage — cracked internals from temperature swings.

What Happens Next

When a device fails, the tester documents which check or valve failed and why. From there it's a straightforward path: diagnose, repair with the correct parts, and re-test. Because our trucks carry a full parts inventory, we complete most repairs on the same visit as the failed test — and when we perform the repair, the re-certification is included at no extra charge.

Deadline pressure? Most water districts allow 30–60 days from the failure notice. Same-day repair and re-certification is available — call (562) 343-1436.

Repair or Replace?

Most failed devices are repairable, and repair is almost always cheaper than replacement. Replacement makes sense when the body itself is cracked, parts are no longer manufactured, or the device is so old that repairs would repeat annually. Either way, you'll get a written estimate before any work begins.
